The emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri) is the largest penguin alive, standing over a metre tall and breeding through the Antarctic winter — the only bird that does. Males incubate a single egg on their feet for two months in the dark, huddling in thousands against temperatures far below freezing. The species is recognisable by its size, its black head and back, and the golden-yellow ear patches that bleed down into a lemon wash across the chest. Models of the species suit printed figurines, Antarctic and aquarium scenes in games and film, and colony set-ups where several birds need different poses.
