The common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) lives in shallow coastal water across much of the world's temperate and tropical seas, denning in rock crevices and hunting crabs and shellfish at night. It is the species most marine research on octopus intelligence has been done with, and the one most people picture: a soft mottled body about the size of a football with eight arms trailing behind it, able to shift from sandy pale to deep rust in a heartbeat. Models of the species suit reef and aquarium scenes in games and film, printed display pieces, and marine education visuals.
